" You know you’re a real cyclist when...the friend who was so happy to see you on his morning drive wonders why you gave him the finger when he honked. "

Our History

Our history at is still short. The club was born of the idea that bringing together bicyclists from Downers Grove and the surrounding areas could enhance their riding experiences.

The first meeting of club members was held at Ballydoyle in Downers Grove on a Sunday morning in March of 2006. The "breakfast club" meeting was well attended, the idea of forming the club was well received, and the formation of the club was underway.

There were many conversations and organizational meetings that occurred following that original "breakfast club" meeting. A date was chosen and a meeting scheduled to have a memebership kick-off meeting.

This meeting was held on Tuesday May 16, 2006 at 7:00 at the Lincoln Center in Downers Grove.

The inaugural meeting of the DGBC was well attended by 100+ people supporting the idea that Downers Grove could use a bicycle club. President Ron Girard addressed the standing-room only crowd. Ron spoke about the purpose of the club and the role the club would like to take within the community. Each of the sponsors presented the club with a (much appreciated) monetary gift. They were given an opportunity to address the audience and were presented DGBC shirts as a small token of appreciation.

The biggest concern of those in attendance was the ride schedule. Ron indicated the club would be making efforts to accommodate everyone’s riding needs. He added the club is for the members, not just for the Board Members. It was decided that updated ride information would be available via the web site as soon as possible.

After much discussion the first meeting of the DGBC adjourned.
